Yesterday I went to visit an artist friend of mine. Peggy Hinaekian.
I walked into her Picasso-esque home in La Jolla with high vaulted ceilings bathed in natural light. Her entrance way was lined with large brilliant canvases in oranges, blues and reds. Peggy told me, “Most of my paintings are blue, orange, and red.” I could see that those are her favorite colors to paint with. They are my favorite color combinations together too. Maybe that’s why I’m so drawn to her work.

Taking time to tell me the titles of her work, stopping to check scribbles she had on the canvas backs, we made our way through stacks of paintings Red. This one is called Seduction in Red.” Or, “Bird on Wire. This one is called Bird on a Wire.” I have a client who commissioned three paintings of “Birds on a Wire.”
“I forget what this one is. Oh, “Aqua and Blue”, as she reads the back upside down. And this one is “Three Blue Sails.”
We moved on into her drawing room. Where Peggy showed me piles of etchings and boxes of paintings that I could look through. Impressed by her boundless creativity, I thumbed through them, taking out the ones I felt especially drawn to. It was awe inspiring to be in the space of so much creativity.
Peggy like me, is a lifetime writer. She has kept a journal since she was 12 years old. Curious, I asked, “When do you make time to write?” as we sat amidst hundreds of finished canvases.

Author
Unlike me, Peggy has published several completed books. I confess, “I am really strong at starting things. I’m not so good at finishing them though.” I tell her about the books I have started writing and those currently in progress.
“Write every day,” she said. “And use lots of dialogue, it makes your writing come alive.”
“Add photos, that’s what I did in my memoir,” continues Peggy as she beams at me. “Tell me what you’re writing about.”
Peggy leaned in, as I described my story. “That’s interesting,” she said.
“Thank you,” I beamed back at her.
