A Visit to Bohinjsko Jezero or Lake Bohinj
In the morning, Michael had all the timetables figured out and we had to catch a train, or rather a bus to Bled- or rather past Bled to Bohinsky Jezero.
We missed the first bus, so had time to relax and take a cappuccino (wieder in Ördnung!) and nut strudel at the Hotel Sloan (which Michael informed me means elephant 🐘). Plus I sent the sugar packet with the elephant on it to Todd. I also bought T-Shirts of Ljubljana for me and Todd – I figured they would be good conversation starters.
Our bus connection went well and the ride through the Slovenian countryside green hills and past Lake Bled was schöne (beautiful). Once we arrived, unloaded at Bohinsky Jezero, we saw an abundance of Austrian looking clean, flower-boxed guest houses. First in the small tiny town, we went to check one (of the guest houses)out. They were full, so we went to where we had the reservation.
The receptionist surprisingly had no record of our reservation at all; even as we had been right there at the tourist office the day before, when they called (making the reservation) for us. Strange, we thought, something is funny. As they were full, though the day before we had been told they had a “small room” for us. We ventured over to the travel office.
This lady was also a bit strange, but located us another room up the hill for 5,000 S.I.T. including both dinner and breakfast. (The nights before it was only 2,500.) This was according to her our only choice unless we wanted to walk 3 kilometers with our heavy packs. She also told us that one of the hotels Michael was interested in was not a hotel, but a restaurant.
I was confused, es at one point, when she said, “The room is 5,000 but it’s free.” I thought we were getting comped, but no. She meant “frei” (available). So we took it. Albeit it was a small uphill hike on a paved road. Michael was calling me a softie, as I didn’t want to hike carrying my pack, but he was the one out of breath when we finally reached the hotel at the top.
Thanks to my American 🇺🇸 ingenuity, I asked for a room with a view of the lake (Lake Bohin), and yes, to see the room first. This got us a nice, large, balconied room with a view of the forests, mountains in the background, and a lake glimpse.
We asked to rent bicycles at the hotel desk, but Michael found it too expensive (2,500 for a half day or so). So we went to the first loused up reservation place and got them for 400 an hour. It was raining at first, so we sat outside on the terrace and had a great home cooked lunch!!
I ordered a killer mushroom soup – not creamed, just fresh large Wald Pilzen (forest mushrooms) and it had a super homemade shepherds bread! Then for Nachtisch (dessert) I had the best chocolate crepes I’ve had all this time, thick and excellent!! Michael had a soup – not as special, and nut crepes -good too.
